Graduation Party Food Calculator

Congrats to the grad! Figuring out how much food to buy for the party is its own kind of homework, though - especially because most graduation parties don't work like a normal sit-down meal. Here's how to think about it.

It's probably an open house, not a dinner party

Most graduation parties are backyard, open-house-style events: people drift in and out over 3-4 hours instead of everyone sitting down to eat at once. That changes the math. You're not feeding one full meal to every guest - you're keeping a spread available the whole time, and most people will graze rather than clean a full plate. Plan for roughly 60-70% of a normal per-person meal portion, spread across finger foods rather than one big main dish.

Lean into finger food and a grazing table

This is exactly why grazing tables and finger-food spreads are so popular for grad parties - they hold up well over a few hours, guests can help themselves whenever they wander over, and there's no awkward moment of trying to get 60 people to sit down at once. A good spread mixes a couple of easy mains (sliders, a taco bar) with snackable sides (chips and dip, a veggie or fruit tray, a cheese board) that don't wilt if they sit out for a while.

Finger-food mains: Sliders, mini sandwiches, or a taco/nacho bar - about 3-4oz of protein per person spread across the party

Grazing sides: Chips and dip, veggie tray, fruit tray, cheese and crackers - budget 4-6oz per person total across everything

Something sweet: A sheet cake or cupcakes work well since guests come and go - one slice or cupcake per person, plus a few extra

Drinks: A drink station guests can self-serve all afternoon - 2-3 drinks per person is a safe range for a multi-hour event

Teens eat differently than adults

Grad party guest lists usually mix the graduate's friends (mostly teens) with family and adults. Teens tend to eat more than adults at these events, particularly on the finger-food items - so if a big chunk of your list is the grad's friend group, nudge your quantities up rather than down. Adults visiting for a shorter window tend to eat lighter, closer to a snack than a meal.
